Listened to Maestro Zubin Mehta conducting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at The Esplanade yesterday evening. For two hours we focussed only on the music, putting everything else aside. It was marvellous.
The orchestra played Beethoven’s Leonora Overture No. 3, Ravel’s La Valse, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”. At the start they played the two national anthems. It was a rousing and beautiful rendering of Majulah Singapura.
This was an 80th anniversary concert - it is both the Orchestra’s 80th season and Mehta’s 80th year. Mehta conducted with energy despite his age, and despite having just had a hip operation. The organisers surprised him with a cake after the concert (and the orchestra played Happy Birthday!). Glad I could wish him happy birthday in person too. - LHL
